Viswanathan Anand upset world champion Magnus Carlsen in a one-day blitz match ahead of the 10th edition of the Norway Chess Championship, after R Praggnanandhaa.

Anand, on the other hand, finished with 5 points in the 10-player blitz competition early on Tuesday, losing to Anish Giri (Netherlands) and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (France) in the fourth and ninth rounds, respectively.

The Indian GM won the blitz against Aryan Tari (Norway) before drawing with So in round two. He overcame experienced Veselin Topalov in the third round before sharing the point with Teimur Radjabov.

After losing to Giri and drawing with Hao Wang, Anand overcame Carlsen (China). Following a draw against Shakhriyar Mamedyarov and a loss to Vachier-Lagrave, his hopes of a high finish were dashed.

Anand’s victory over Carlsen comes after his compatriot and teen sensation R Praggnandhaa defeated the Norwegian world champion in an online blitz event recently.

American With 6.5 points, Wesley So took first position in the Blitz rankings, one point ahead of Carlsen, while Giri came in third.
