Olympic medalist Varinder Singh passes away

In Jalandhar, Varinder Singh, a World Cup and Olympic medalist who played important in some of India’s finest successes in the 1970s, passed suddenly.

On Tuesday morning in Jalandhar, Varinder Singh, a World Cup and Olympic medallist who was instrumental in some of India’s finest successes in the 1970s, passed suddenly. He was thus 75. At the 1975 Men’s Hockey World Cup in Kuala Lumpur, Varinder Singh played for the Indian men’s hockey team, which took home the gold medal. India now only has one gold medal from the prestigious competition after defeating Pakistan 2-1 in the final.

 

Additionally, Singh played on the squads that captured the bronze medal at the Munich Summer Olympics in 1972 and the silver medal at the Amsterdam World Cup in 1973.

At the Asian Games in 1974 and 1978, he also took home a silver medal. Thus, the eminent Indian hockey player participated in the Montreal Olympics in 1975.

Varinder received the renowned Dhyan Chand Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007.

Singh’s passing was regretted by Hockey India.

Thus, “the hockey fraternity around the world will remember Varinder Singh’s achievements,” according to a news release.
