According to a statement from the Indian Olympic Association, renowned javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra won’t be competing in the next Commonwealth Games in Birmingham because of an injury acquired during the World Athletics Championships (IOA). Due to an injury he received following his performance at the World Championships, Neeraj, who on Sunday in Oregon won a silver medal with a throw of 88.13 meters, was unable to successfully defend his Commonwealth Games gold medal.
The javelin thrower for Team India, Mr. Neeraj Chopra, called me from the US earlier today to inform me that he wouldn’t be able to compete in the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games due to fitness issues. Mr. Chopra had an MRI on Monday following his participation in the Eugene 2022 World Athletics Championships, and as a result, his medical staff has recommended a month of recovery. Neeraj is the current Olympic champion after winning the gold medal in the Tokyo Summer Olympics in 2016.

At the renowned Diamond League in Stockholm last month, Chopra established a new national record of 89.94m, only 6cm short of the 90m standard, the industry standard for javelin throwing. In the end, he received a silver medal. The 24-year-old was beaten out for second place by the Grenadan Anderson Peters, whose longest throw was 90.31 meters.
Chopra has been praising this season’s remarkable results. The top athlete threw a spear 89.30 meters on June 14 while competing in the Paavo Nurmi Games in Finland; last month, he threw it 89.94 meters, shattering his previous record twice.
At the Kuortane Games in Finland, he won the javelin throw competition with a throw of 86.69 meters in sloppy, rainy circumstances.
