MS Dhoni eliminated me from playing XI -Sehwag

Explains why he considered retiring from one-day internationals in 2008 and who prevented him from doing so.

Virender Sehwag changed the concept of a Test opener with his free-spirited batting for the Indian cricket team. He appeared in 104 Tests, 251 ODIs, and 19 T20Is, hitting 8586, 8273, and 394 runs in each format. In addition, Sehwag is the first Indian cricketer to score a triple century in a Test match. Even a brilliant cricketer like him had considered quitting early at one point. The incident happened during India’s 2008 tour of Australia. Virender Sehwag elaborated on the subject in a performance when asked how to deal with criticism.

What happens in Australia between Sehwag and Dhoni?

“In this game, there are two types of participants. Some athletes relish the opportunity to take on new tasks. Take, for example, Virat Kohli. Before answering, he listens to the criticism. Others, on the other hand, are unaffected by criticism because they are secure in their talents. That was my preferred method of play. It didn’t matter to me whether people criticized me or not. While we were in Australia in 2008, this question (of retirement) came to mind. I made a return in the Test series, scoring 150. In ODIs, I was only able to score three or four tries. As a result, MS Dhoni has left me out of the starting XI. Then it occurred to me to retire from ODI cricket.On Cricbuzz’s ‘Match Party’ show, Sehwag said, “I assumed I’d stick to Test cricket.”

“At that point, Sachin Tendulkar stepped in to save the day. He said, ‘This is a terrible period in your life.’ Simply wait until the end of the tour, then come home, consider your options, and decide what to do next. ‘ I had not yet declared my retirement at the time, which was fortunate. I would have announced my retirement during the Australia tour, returned to India, and only played Test cricket. The passage of time has altered the situation. We took a flight back to India. K Srikanth was the chairman (of selectors). ‘How should I proceed?’ he wondered. Despite my excellent performance, I was benched for three to four games, I explained. So, what should I do now? “You pick me if you give me faith that you will pick me in all the matches,” I informed him. “If you don’t want to do it, don’t.” Srikanth then chatted with MS Dhoni during the 2008 Asia Cup. Dhoni then asked what my preferred batting position was and told me that I will be ready for all matches. I was able to play some decent cricket after that.”

In 2013, Sehwag last competed for India in an international competition.
