Joe Root, 31, is the only member of an elite club of Test cricket run scorers who is still playing at the age of 31. Sunil Gavaskar, an Indian cricket star, was the first to be inducted into the exclusive club.
When Joe Root, the former England captain, reached 10,000 Test runs during his match-winning 115* against New Zealand at Lord’s on Sunday, he became the 14th batsman to do so. Root, 31, is one of a select handful of run-scorers who are still playing Test cricket at the age of 31. The renowned Indian batsman Sunil Gavaskar was the first to enter the elite group. On March 7, 1987, Gavaskar scored 10,000 Test runs in a match against Pakistan in Ahmedabad.

“I knew I needed 57 runs,” Sunil Gavaskar told Indian Express about the feat and the joy of becoming the first-ever member of the 10,000 club. Normally, I don’t pay attention to the scoreboard. When you reach a score of 50, though, you will be met with applause. At that time, you realize it. I think I got to 50 with a single, if my memory serves me well. As a result, I realized there were still seven runs to go.
“When you reach 10,000, it’s simply great.” It was magical since it had never been done before. Even 9,000 had never been completed before, and I was the first. 9,000, on the other hand, is a four-digit quantity. Because 10,000 is a five-digit number, it was almost like climbing Mt Everest for the first time.”
The root has been accepted into the elite club. Only retired Sir Alastair Cook’s 33 centuries at this level surpass Root’s current Test batting average of nearly 50. Which is the measure of an all-time great. And with Root now free of what he described as a “very bad relationship” with England captain Joe Root’s innings on Sunday suggest there will be plenty more runs to come.
