The young Indian men’s hockey team put in a brave effort to defeat Japan 1-0 and won the bronze medal at the Asia Cup hockey 2022 in Jakarta on Wednesday. India came out with a purpose after a dramatic 4-4 tie with South Korea on Tuesday, scoring a field goal through Raj Kumar Pal in the seventh minute of the game and then defending in numbers to seal the deal. India opened brightly and pushed hard in the first five minutes of the match, but their attacks fizzled once they were inside the opponent’s D.
In the seventh minute, the Indians broke the deadlock, with Uttam Singh doing all the hard work on the right flank to set up Rajkumar Pal, who delicately stroked the ball past Takashi Yoshikawa, the Japanese goalie. The Indians were granted two consecutive penalty corners three minutes later, but both were squandered. In the closing five minutes of the first quarter, Japan pressed hard in search of an equalizer, staging numerous raids, but the Indian defense held fast to keep their lead.
Japan continued to attack despite the one-goal deficit, collecting two consecutive penalty corners in the 20th minute, but the Indians defended well to keep their lead.
Both Japan and India had a few more chances in the second quarter, but both teams were defeated in the final third.
In the 48th minute, Japan won three penalty corners in a succession, but couldn’t break through the Indian defense.Japan was awarded another penalty corner in the 51st minute, but the Indian defense once again blocked the opportunity.
While Japan fought hard in the final minutes, the Indians successfully protected their one-goal lead and finished on the podium.Later in the day, Malaysia and South Korea will compete for the title.
