Emma Lamb and Nat Sciver helped England’s women win their first ODI match against South Africa by five wickets.
In the opening One-Day International, Nat Sciver’s all-around effort and Emma Lamb’s superb century helped England defeat South Africa by five wickets.
Emma Lamb’s excellent century and Nat Sciver’s all-around performance helped England upset South Africa by a margin of five wickets in the first one-day international of the three-match series on Monday in Northampton. With this, England now has a 1-0 series advantage. While batting first, South Africa were bowled out for 218 in 47.4 overs. Chloe Tryon (88) and Laura Wolvaardt (43) were South Africa’s top two batters, respectively. Nat Sciver completely destroyed the South African with a medium-pace 4/59.
Nat Sciver (102) and Lamb (102) accounted for the brunt of England’s 219-point surge (55). The hosts reached the target in 32.1 overs, surpassing it. Nadine de Klerk was the visitors’ favorite bowler with a score of 2/44.
Andrie Steyn was dismissed for 14 when Katherine Brunt caught him leg-before-wicket for South Africa, who had elected to bat first. The visitors were reduced to 2/34 as Brunt cleaned up Lara Goodall, thanks to captain Heather Knight’s excellent slip catch.
Sune Luus and Laura Wolvaardt tried to save South Africa, but Luus was removed for 7 by spinner Sophie Ecclestone when her stumps were castled, leaving the team at 3/52. Additionally, following a superb catch by Kate Cross at mid-on, Marizanne Kapp was taken down by Sciver for 12 runs.
After this fourth wicket fell at 73, Wolvaardt and Tryon put up a quick 35-run partnership, but the latter was clean bowled by spinner Charlie Dean for a well-made 43 from 72. Half of the South African squad remained inside the hut for 108.
Tryon and Nadine de Klerk prevented the visitors from falling further behind thanks to a 97-run stand. They temporarily made it challenging for the hosts to acquire wickets. She surrendered a catch to Cross at deep midwicket after Tryon reached his half-century and kept adding runs, losing her wicket to Sciver.
Klerk was unable to get the help she needed from the other batters. At 218 she was the last batter to be struck out, leading to 38 runs.
Sciver (4/59) and Katherine Brunt (3/18) were England’s best two bowlers. Dean and Ecclestone both claimed one wicket.
England lost Tammy Beaumont for one run while chasing 219 when Kapp persuaded Tammy Beaumont to drive and castled her stumps.
Lamb and Sophia Dunkley then put up a 78-run stand. Dunkley was caught leg-before-wicket by Klerk for 22 as the game came to a close. With 86/2, England was ahead.
With yet another superb partnership, Sciver and Lamb scored 89 runs to send the hosts home. At the age of fifty, Sciver was still in charge. Sciver lost her wicket after reaching 55 runs and pushing England’s total to 175 runs. 44 runs remained to be scored with just under half an inning remaining.
Tumi Sekhukhune outscored Lamb by 202 runs despite his century.
